| The Folsom
Project for the Visually Impaired (FPVI) was established as a community
service project in 1989 by the Folsom City Host Lions with the support
of public organizations, individuals, and the Lions and Lionesses of District
4-C5. Folsom Prison correctional staff and inmates operate the program.
FPVI is dedicated to providing quality services to the blind, visually
impaired, hearing impaired and learning disabled.
When originally conceived,
the function of FPVI was simply to provide an audio cassette library for
the blind and visually impaired. However, in their 16 years of existence,
FPVI has greatly broadened the scope of their program. Their services
now also include: recordings on CD's, Braille Transaction, Closed Captioning,
Web Accessibility and the cleaning and gauging of donated eyeglasses.
They have grown from 4 inmate workers in the beginning to the current inmate
staff of 18. They now have a library of over 1000 quality recordings
in a wide range of topics by a variety of authors. The selection
includes: best sellers, mysteries, westerns, fiction, non-fiction, science
fiction, romance, self-help, textbooks, classics and children's books.
They also provide the Lion's Pride newsletter and District Directories
to blind 4-C5 Lions, as well as aural media and Braille to Lions throughout
the United States.
FPVI's services are free
to all who use the program. The TDK Corporation generously provides
all tapes and CDs free of charge.
FPVI has the capability
to produce recordings in English, Spanish, Mandarin and Cantonese.
They also offer a selection of recordings in Tag-a-log.
Presently there are 12 full
time Braille transcribers on the FPVI inmate staff and the on-going nature
of the Braille training allows all new employees in the program the opportunity
to become fully certified Braille transcribers. These Braille transcribers
have been working for the California Department of Education brailing children's
books and textbooks for both public and private schools throughout California.
FPVI also Closed Captions
over a dozen films each month for the CA Community Colleges and other state
agencies. Additionally, FPVI creates ADA-accessible PDF documents
and fill-in forms, as well as converting other document types and web pages/sites
into formats accessible to the visually disabled.
Working closely with Lions
In Sight, FPVI is providing more than 100,000 pairs of eyeglasses per year
to those in need in the United States and throughout the world.
