Citrus Heights Lions are saddened by the loss of one of their dearest members. Below is an article taken from the Lion's Roar, September 2004 issue. The article provides a little bit of background information on Lion Malcolm. Although he wasn't able to attend the club meetings, just knowing he was out there and still a Lion gave us all comfort. He will be missed. Here's the article: On Sunday, July 25, 2004 Lions: Claudia, Sandy, Cindy, Stephanie and dog Corinne visited with Lion Malcolm at his place and brought him some cookies for his 93rd birthday. During the visit Lion Malcolm had a lot to say. He told us he has 3 sons, 1 daughter, 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. One son lives in Hawaii, one in Granite Bay, the other in Alverta and his daughter lives in Colorado. Malcolm has a great sense of humor. As he was telling us that he was born in Providence R.I., he snickered while saying, “Damn Yankees.” He told us a little story about his grandson, JP, who is a Paramedic stationed right down the street from where Malcolm lives. JP’s very first call as a new Paramedic was for his grandfather. As he walked into Malcolm’s apartment he found him on the floor and wanted to know what he was doing down there. He proceeded to give Malcolm instructions on how to keep from falling. Malcolm is very proud of his grandson and seems very happy to have him working nearby. Lion Malcolm had been a Lion for 30+ years. For two of those years he served as President with Lion George Clark as Secretary and Lion Ralph Vatalaro as Treasurer. When asked how he came to be a Lion he said that it was because he had many friends in Citrus Heights. He had lived in Citrus Heights for 20 or more years. He was a Fireman for 31 years. He was acting Fire Chief in BC Canada during the war. In Citrus Heights he had volunteered his time as a fireman and helped put out some fires until one day the Citrus Heights Fire Chief told him that he was over educated and therefore fired. Malcolm had a good laugh about his reason for being fired and whenever he saw the Citrus Heights Fire Chief they both had a good laugh over it. Lion Malcolm had a cute little place. As one looked around they would see Firemen and Lions memorabilia among several pictures of his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and other family and friends. He loves to have
company but prefers to reserve his afternoons for taking a nap. He
doesn’t do much socializing with the people that live in his building but
he will usually have his lunch and dinner in the main dining room with
others. However, he prefers fixing his own breakfast in the comfort of
his cozy little apartment every morning.
Our most heart-felt sympathies go out to Malcolm's family and friends. |
